Greetings! My name is Reiner Dizon, and I am currently studying at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). I am pursuing a B.S.E. in Computer Engineering with minors in Computer Science and Mathematical Science. I currently finishing up my undergraduate studies this semester. Currently, I am working on an interdisciplinary research project where we design and test a bipedal robot controlled using a simple model of human walking biomechanics. I have previously completed my senior design project with two of my classmates in the ECE department in which we instrumented a motorcycle helmet with heads up display and voice recognition. Moreover, I recently concluded my Honors Thesis, researching and comparing fault tolerance of certain image coding algorithms specific for deep space communication.
Why did choose this course of study? It boils down to two main events in my childhood. In 5th grade, I knew that I wanted to become an engineer one day because most of my family members were engineers. However, family legacy was not the primary motivation of my current pursuit because my parents did not impose a certain career path for any of their children. Thanks, Mom and Dad! It was in 8th grade where I realized what type of engineering I wanted to pursue. My English teacher, back then, assigned a project where her students delve into a certain career, and by accident, I discovered computer engineering due to my passions with breaking computers when I was little. Yes, I broke most computers that my family owned as a child, which somewhat angered my parents back then. The rest is history.
So, what’s next? Well, I plan to enroll to graduate school as soon as possible, preferably after finishing my undergraduate studies. I would possibly study in one of three fields: Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics. My furthest educational goal is to earn a doctoral degree in one or more of these fields. My journey of finding where to go next is an ongoing one, looking first to schools that I had considered before when applying as an undergraduate. In the meantime, I will continue to strive to become a better student every single day which would hopefully translate as a better engineer and, possibly, professor in the future. There is plenty of road ahead of me, and I am looking forward to what is coming next.
